  • "Y.M.C.A.," which the president called the “gay national anthem,” has been a staple at his rallies and events for years

  • Donald said wife Melania Trump "hates" how he dances to the disco tune

Donald Trumpsaid his dance moves to the Village People's "Y.M.C.A." — which he described as the “gay national anthem” — brought the song to the top of the music charts.

Addressing a crowd at The Villages retirement community in Floridaon Friday, May 1, the president, 79, suggested that he is to thank for the 2024 chart resurgence of the 1970s tune, which became an unlikely anthem for Donald during his campaign.

Donald also told the crowd that wifeMelania Trumpisn't a fan of his reaction to the song. “She hateswhen I danceto what is sometimes referred to as the gay national anthem,” he said. “She hates it."

"Y.M.C.A.” topped the Billboard sales charts in late 2024, decades after it first debuted.

“The song 'Y.M.C.A.' spends a fifth week at No. 1 on Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales, the most for any song by a group in 2024,” Billboard said in anX postat the time.

“The song originally reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 in 1979," the music chart company added.

Donald recounted the disco classic’s chart resurgence during his 2024 presidential campaign this week, but he falsely inflated the statistics, stating that it "went to No. 1 for months."

"We love that song," he said. “But [Melania] goes, ‘Darling, please.’ You know, she's a very elegant woman. She goes, ‘Darling, please don't dance. It's not presidential.’ I said, ‘It may not be presidential, but I'm leading by 20 points in the polls or something.’ ”

The president later broke out his signature dance moves — a double fist pump and hip shake — as "Y.M.C.A.” played at the end of his address at the Florida retirement community. He also added in a faux golf swing.

"Y.M.C.A.” first became tied to Donald during his 2020 reelection campaign, during which it often soundtracked events as he danced. It even played duringthe final moments of his presidencyin January 2021, as he and Melania, 56 boarded Air Force One.

When he ran for president again in 2024, Donald concluded over 110 rallies with the "Y.M.C.A.,” perABC News. After he won the election, he alsoenlisted the help of the Village People at his inauguration events.

Donald has previously referred to the song as the “gay national anthem” during various other occasions in the past.

During an appearance on theNelk Boys'Full Sendpodcastin March, the president said, "You know what gets them rocking [at Mar-a-Lago]? 'Y.M.C.A.’Did you ever hear that? They call it the gay national anthem," Donald said.

He added that the song "gets people up, and it gets them moving."

Detained Myanmar ex-leader Suu Kyi to meet legal team this weekend

May 1 (Reuters) - The legal team of Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi plans to meet the detained former leader this weekend after she was transferred to house arrest in the capital ‌by the military-backed government, a representative said on Friday.

Reuters

Nobel laureate Suu Kyi has been detained since ‌the military ousted her civilian government in a coup in February 2021. The coup triggered a deadly civil war that has engulfed much of the impoverished Southeast Asian nation, and her whereabouts had been unclear.

"Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is currently still in Naypyidaw," a member of her legal team told Reuters, using an honorific for the veteran politician, and confirming that she had been moved to house arrest on Thursday night.

On Thursday, state media reported she would be moved ‌to house arrest, but did not say where. State media also broadcast a photograph of Suu Kyi, seated on a wooden bench with two uniformed personnel, the first public image of her in years.

Suu Kyi's legal team planned to meet the 80-year-old on Sunday to discuss her position and bring her some supplies.

"The situation has shifted. I think it will no longer be just a standard prison visit, but rather a meeting where the legal team will go and discuss matters with her," the legal representative said.

After a marathon run of secret trials ‌following the coup, Suu Kyi was sentenced to 33 years after she was convicted of charges ranging from corruption and inciting election fraud to violating state secrecy rules. Her allies maintain the charges were politically motivated and aimed at sidelining her.

The sentence was later reduced to 27 years, and then by a sixth in a Myanmar New Year amnesty on April 17 that freed her ally and co-defendant Win Myint, the former president.

On Thursday ‌her sentence was reduced by a further one-sixth as part of a wider amnesty of prisoners in Myanmar's jails, before the move to house arrest was announced.

Myanmar's junta chief-turned-president Min Aung Hlaing, who led the coup, has faced persistent international pressure to release political ‌detainees since a recent election, including from ASEAN. He is seeking to reengage with the Southeast Asian bloc after it banned Myanmar from its summits as a result of the coup.

Suu Kyi, the daughter of the country's independence hero General Aung San, was held under house arrest for a total of 15 years ‌under a previous junta at her family residence on Yangon's Inya Lake, where she famously gave impassioned speeches to crowds of supporters over the metal gates of the property.

Bayesian superyacht sinking ‘not caused by storm’, says preliminary report

Aninvestigationhas found that the sinking of a Bayesiansuperyachtoff the coast ofSicily, wasnot caused by a storm as originally suspected, according to reports.

The Independent US

The 56-metre (184ft)Bayesian sank off the coastof theItalianisland on 19 August, 2024, killing seven people including Britishbillionaireand tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter.

Italian prosecutors have now found that a storm was not to blame for the incident, according to findings shared with Sky News.

The weather on the day of the incident amounted to “little more than a squall, a sudden increase in wind speed that precedes thunderstorms and downpours,” which should have been manageable for the crew of the ship.

Preliminary findings suggest thatthe yacht is thought to have sunkdue to improper actions on the part of the crew of the boat and their underestimation of the weather with certain safety devices not being activated properly.

The investigation is also exploring the possibility of alleged crimes including negligent shipwreck and multiple counts of manslaughter for the yacht’s captain and two of its crew members.

The yacht’s manufacturers,Italian prosecutors, British marine investigators and survivorshave all made different claimsabout why the boat sank so suddenly.

Last May, an interim report into the sinking, released by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB), showed wind speeds of 63.4 knots (73.0mph) on the yacht’s beam were sufficient to tip it over.

It was thought that the extreme winds were enough to topple the boat causing its passengers to be thrown into the sea.

The report suggested the structure may have compromised the boat’s stability in “motoring mode,” vulnerabilities that were not included in theyacht’s stability manual.

The MAIB report also challenged claims made by yacht builder The Italian Sea Group, finding that the Bayesian would capsize at a 70.6-degree heel, contrary to the builder’s assertion it could recover from 73 degrees.

Giovanni Costantino, the Chief of TISG, has described the yacht as “unsinkable” and claimed the crew must have left doors or hatches open, allowing water in.

The Bayesian was recovered from the sea ten months after its sinking in a multi-million pound operation.

At the time of its sinking, 22 people were on board. A coastguard official in Palermo said at the time thatbad weather had been expectedbut not of the magnitude witnessed, with winds of up to 90mph recorded on the day.

Subsequent investigations identified that the boat was hit by a mesocyclone, which is a type of powerful rotating thunderstorm that can produce tornadoes or extreme wind bursts.

Mr Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was also on board the vessel and managed to escape. She told doctors that at 4am, the boat had tilted and she and her husband were woken up. Other victims included the yacht’s chef Recaldo Thomas and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer.
